IP Protection Classes

The protection class is denoted by short symbols consisting of two code letters IP and code numbers relating to the protection class.

Example: IP65

The two digits represent different forms of environmental impact:

  • The first digit indicates protection against the ingress of solid objects.
  • The second digit indicates protection against the ingress of liquids.

The higher the value of each digit, the greater the protection. For example, a luminaire marked IP54 will be better protected against environmental factors than another similar luminaire marked IP42.

1Protection against solid objects over 50mm, e.g. hands, large tools.Protection against vertically falling drops of water.
2Protection against fingers or similar objects over 12.5mm.Protection against vertically falling drops of water when the enclosure is tilted up to 15°.
3Protection against tools, thick wires, etc. over 2.5mm.Protection against spraying water up to 60° from vertical.
4Protection against most wires, screws, etc. over 1mm.Protection against splashing water from any direction.
5Partial protection against dust ingress (no harmful deposit).Protection against low-pressure jets of water from any direction.
6Total protection against dust ingress.Protection against strong jets of water from any direction.
7N/AProtection against the effects of immersion in water to depth between 15cm and 1m.
8N/AProtection against long periods of immersion under pressure. Additional conditions are defined by the manufacturer (e.g., the device may not be hermetically sealed but must function).
9N/AProtection against high-pressure and high-temperature water jets.
